Located just 30 minutes from Lake Michigan in La Porte County, Kingsford Heights is a small town just beginning to expand. Our town has an ideal location, with Michigan City to the north, La Porte to the north, and Valparaiso to the west, which makes for a wonderful place to live. You are close to bigger cities but far enough to enjoy a rural lifestyle.
Purdue Northwest is just 25 minutes from town with easy access to the 80-90 toll road. Hop on the toll road and travel west for 45 minutes to downtown Chicago, perfect for an evening of enjoying the Chicago nightlife. Or travel just 30 minutes to Lake Michigan. Enjoy the wonderful dunes or hang out at the casino. Notre Dame fan? South Bend is approximately 40 minutes to the East on the 80-90 toll road. What more could you ask for in a town!
Kingsford Heights was built in 1942 on 775 acres of farmland in Union Township, just 10 miles south of the City of La Porte, on Hwy 6&35. President Franklin Roosevelt's plans for this city included 3000 homes, schools, police and fire departments, civic buildings, and shops - a new place for workers of the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant (KOP) to call home. 'Victory City', as it was called during planning, took 1 year to build. The design was selected to confuse possible invaders with streets changing names in the middle of town, keeping only the beginning letter alphabetically the same.
The town never reached the planned potential and became a ghost town after WWII when KOP closed and workers moved on. The remaining families bought the town. They raised money to buy out the government and formed a corporation to maintain town services. In 1956 the town was incorporated and got State money to revitalize. In early 1970, many new homes were constructed, bringing new families. Today over 500 families reside in Kingsford Heights. There are many active community groups such as the American Legion, Victory City Ball Club, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, PTA, and many church groups providing services to the residents of this rural town. It has an Elementary School, a Town Hall, Police & Volunteer Fire Departments, the Kingsford Heights Branch of the La Porte County Public Library, many churches, and a few small businesses. A newly (1997) constructed Community Center is located next to Baseball fields and a park in the center of town.
The Kingsford Heights Community Center located at 515 Wayland Rd. is used for many activities that not only benefit the community but also helps those who do not live in town.
Covid hit everyone hard and the Community Center went through many changes. It now has a food program two days a week that help many families with meats, fruits, perishable goods and canned goods!
It also has a FREE Clothing giveaway the first Saturday of every month. Citizens in town and outside of town donate clothing and small household items. Volunteers then go through each item donated and put it in its place on tables where they are neatly folded and and put onto tables or racks by size. Volunteers accept donations at the Center on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00am-2:00PM and the day of the giveaway. Volunteers spend countless hours each month to provide a nice place where those in need can come get what they need without spending a dime!
The Center is also used for Community Garden meetings, Council meetings, Planning Commission meetings, Trunk or Treat, Fun Fairs, Needy Children Toy Drives, Community Dinners (takeout since covid) and much more.
The building since covid has not been rented due to the food program and clothing programs using the building. The Center helps hundreds of citizens in and out of town during the bad time in our economy and that is what counts!

KINGSFORD HEIGHTS WATER
The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.
Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
